30-Day HSK 2 Study Plan (HSK 3.0)

HSK 2 is where the gap between "I studied for HSK 1" and "I can actually use Chinese" gets exposed. The vocabulary doubles to 600 words, the listening goes from picture-match to short dialogues with two voices, and the reading section starts using sentences long enough that you can no longer skim by recognizing one familiar word.

This is a 30-day schedule that fits in 20–25 minutes a day. It assumes you have either passed HSK 1 or can comfortably handle the HSK 1 drill in mixed mode at 80%+. If you cannot, do the 30-day HSK 1 plan first — HSK 2 builds directly on that 300-word base, and skipping it makes everything below twice as hard.

What HSK 2 actually asks of you

Same 35-minute, listening + reading format as HSK 1. But the question count goes up to 60, the dialogues are longer, and the reading passages contain words you do not know — on purpose. The exam is testing whether you can read around an unknown word, not whether you have memorized every entry on the wordlist.

Pass mark is still 120 / 200 (60%). You can miss roughly 24 questions and pass. The realistic goal: recognize 500+ of 600 words on sight, follow a two-person dialogue at near-natural speed, and not freeze on the first unfamiliar character you see.

The plan in one sentence

Learn 12 new HSK 2 words a day for 25 days, drill yesterday's words plus a rotating sample of HSK 1 every session, and use the last 5 days for mock conditions and mistake repair. The HSK 1 reviews are not optional — at least 30% of every HSK 2 listening question still rides on HSK 1 words.

Week 1 (days 1–7): the connector words

HSK 2 doubles down on connectors and time markers: 因为 / 所以 / 但是 / 然后 / 已经 / 正在 / 一直 / 才 / 就 / 还. These words rarely carry the meaning of a sentence on their own, but they tell you when something happened and how two clauses relate. Miss the connector and you will pick the right-sounding wrong answer.

End the week with a focused audio drill on connectors only. If you can hear 已经 and 正在 and immediately know one is past-completed and the other is in-progress, you are on track. If you have to translate first, do it again.

Week 2 (days 8–14): two-character compounds

This is where most HSK 1 students stall. HSK 1 has lots of single-character words; HSK 2 is mostly two-character compounds where you already know each character but not the combination. 方便, 决定, 经常, 见面, 准备, 完成, 一定, 注意 — every one of those is built from HSK 1 pieces, but they mean something specific you cannot guess.

The trick is not to memorize each compound as a fresh word. Read the example sentence first, get the meaning from context, then look at the characters. Memorizing isolated compounds builds a fragile vocabulary that collapses on test day.

Week 3 (days 15–21): the listening jump

HSK 2 listening introduces two-person dialogues: someone asks, someone answers, you have to figure out which one matches the question. The audio is roughly the same speed as HSK 1, but the answer is now in the second sentence. If your HSK 1 habit was "listen for a keyword, pick the picture", that habit is going to fail you here.

Switch the drill to audio → meaning for the entire week. Cover the meaning options, listen, then look. Force yourself to extract the answer from sound, not text. The HSKDrills audio for HSK 2 uses the same Mandarin TTS voice and the same -15% rate as HSK 1, so the listening difficulty curve is gradual — the words change, the speed does not.

Day 21 checkpoint: 80% correct on a 30-question audio-only drill, no replays. Below that, do not move on. A second pass at week 3 is far cheaper than failing the listening section on test day.

Week 4 (days 22–30): pressure and patching

Run 50-minute mock blocks now (HSK 2 is longer than HSK 1). Add a printed answer sheet if you can — bubbling answers under time pressure is a real exam skill that drilling on a phone never trains.

Day 27: full mock under exam conditions. Mark every wrong answer plus every word you had to think about for more than two seconds. Day 28–29: drill only that mistake set, in audio mode. Day 30: rest. Same rule as HSK 1 — the night before, sleep beats cramming.

The 20-minute daily routine

1. 3 min — flash review: yesterday's 12 HSK 2 words, audio mode.
2. 2 min — HSK 1 sample: 8 random HSK 1 words to keep the floor.
3. 10 min — today's 12 new HSK 2 words: hanzi + audio + one example sentence each.
4. 3 min — sentence test: pick 3 of today's words, write or say a sentence using a connector (因为, 所以, 但是, 然后).
5. 2 min — mistake stack: clear at least 3 due items.

The HSK 1 sample is what HSK 2 students always cut first when they get busy. Don't. The exam will test it whether you reviewed it or not.

Five places HSK 2 candidates quietly fail

Connector blindness. If you treat 但是 / 可是 / 不过 as identical "but"s, you are leaking points. They have different registers and the listening section uses tone to signal which one was used.

Aspect particles. 了 / 着 / 过 / 正在 all mark different aspects of an action. HSK 2 reading questions absolutely test this — and it is one of the few places where the exam considers a word literally wrong, not just unnatural.

Measure word inflation. HSK 2 adds 条 / 双 / 套 / 件 / 辆 / 棵 / 瓶. You don't need fluent use, but you need recognition — questions will pair the wrong measure word with the right noun on purpose.

Direction complements. 过来 / 过去 / 起来 / 下去 attached to verbs change meaning in ways pinyin alone won't tell you. Listen to the example sentence, not just the dictionary entry.

Skipping HSK 1 review. About 30% of HSK 2 listening still uses HSK 1 vocabulary. If a candidate's HSK 1 base has rotted, they will lose points on words they "already know".

If you have less than 30 days

Two weeks: cut weeks 1 and 4, run weeks 2 and 3 only. You will skip the connector drilling and the mock prep, but you will still hit the listening wall practice that matters most.

One week: open the HSK 2 drill, mixed mode, 30 questions a day, every day. Skip everything else. It is not optimal, but it is honest practice on the actual material.

What to do after HSK 2

HSK 3 is a much bigger jump than 1 → 2. The wordlist roughly doubles again, and the reading section gets short paragraphs instead of single sentences. Take a one-week break after HSK 2 — your brain is consolidating, and pushing straight into HSK 3 vocab burns the consolidation. Then either re-take HSK 2 mocks for confidence, or start the HSK 3 plan when it goes live.
