HSK 4 is where intermediate learners consolidate and expand. You're graduating from survival phrases to nuanced communication. Vocabulary jumps to 1200 cumulative words—600 new entries. But the real shift is complexity: longer passive sentences, conditional clauses, metaphorical language, and reading that requires inference, not just comprehension.
This 30-day plan assumes you've mastered HSK 3 or score 80%+ on HSK 3 drills in mixed mode. HSK 4 takes for granted that the HSK 1-3 target vocabulary is stable; the HSKDrills HSK 3 drill is a partial bridge pool, so supplement it with your course list.
What HSK 4 Really Tests
Same 50-minute, 60-question format, but every part is denser. Listening comprehension includes colloquial patterns, rapid speech with natural filler words ("嗯", "那个"), and scenarios beyond travel or education—workplace conversation, news broadcasts, social commentary. Reading passages exceed 200 characters; you can't decode every word.
Passing grade remains 120/200 (60%), but the gap between 120 and 150 is brutal. At 120, you're guessing. At 150, you understand without effort. The difference: automatic recognition of 800+ words in any context, ability to infer meaning from grammar rather than lookup, fluent listening at near-native speed.

The 30-Day Strategy
Learn 20 new HSK 4 words daily (600 ÷ 30), while continuously reviewing HSK 1–3 words and previous-day HSK 4 words. First 20 days: pure vocabulary accumulation with contextual reading. Days 21–25: full-length practice tests. Days 26–30: exam simulation and weak-point repair. Core principle: read first, then listen — reverse your instinct from HSK 3.
Week 1 (Days 1–7): Business & Social Vocabulary
HSK 4 introduces workplace and formal discourse: 会议 (meeting), 部门 (department), 合作 (cooperation), 决定 (decision), 情况 (situation), 问题 (problem/issue), 机会 (opportunity), 计划 (plan). These are frequent in listening Section 3 (long conversations). Spend 2 minutes per word maximum. Ignore etymology. Hear the word, see the English, move on.
By day 7, you should complete 140 new HSK 4 words. Spot-check yourself: can you hear "合作" and think "cooperation" in under 0.5 seconds?
Week 2 (Days 8–14): Complex Sentence Patterns
HSK 4 grammar introduces constraints, conditionals, and emphasis. Key structures: 不仅...而且, 虽然...但是, 由于...所以, 要么...要么, 无论...都. These structures appear in 40% of reading questions. Don't memorize the rule—collect 20 example sentences and read aloud until the pattern feels natural.

The Five Most Common HSK 4 Mistakes
- Ignoring HSK 1–3 review. 30% of HSK 4 uses HSK 1–3 vocabulary in different contexts. Weak fundamentals = systematic loss.
